Fatigue has such a significant impact on workplace safety that the National Safety Council (NSC) has added it to it’s new list of occupational injury risks. This is the first time that worker fatigue has been included in this list. The addition of fatigue in this annual report “sheds new light on the impact of fatigue” by educating on preventable deaths, advises Occupational Health and Safety (OHS). The AHEAD 300 hand-held EEG device, approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2016, was the subject of a clinical trial conducted among adults in 11 hospitals. Researchers found that the device, developed by BrainScope Company Inc., of Bethesda Maryland, can quickly rule out whether a person with a head injury is likely to have brain bleeding requiring further evaluation and treatment. The results have an accuracy rate of 97 percent. Approximately 2.5 million people arrive at the emergency room with a suspected head injury each year in the U.S. according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. First responders such as EMT’s may use this test as well as medical doctors and emergency room personnel. Diffuse Axonal Injury – Cause, Diagnosis and Treatment

Diffuse axonal injury (DAI) is a common and usually severe form of traumatic brain injury. The brain moving back and forth within the skull at high speed causes it, rather than a blow to the head. When the brain suddenly accelerates or decelerates, damage can occur over a widespread, or “diffuse’ area. Although the amount of damage may vary in severity, DAI is a leading cause of death related to traumatic brain injury. Car and motorcycle accidents, shaken baby syndrome, falls and sports injuries can all cause diffuse axonal injury. The part of the brains nerve cells, known as axons, are sheared from tissue sliding over [...]

How Can Airbags Injure When They Are Supposed to Save Lives?

Anyone who has access to the news is aware of the massive recall of vehicles due to defective Takata airbags. A report issued by the NY Times, in December of last year, indicated that 11 deaths and 184 injuries had occurred in just the US from exploding airbags that propelled shrapnel into the chests of vehicle occupants. Over 92 million vehicles from multiple auto makers were recalled. When considering those figures, it seems like a very small percentage of deaths and injuries compared to the number of installed airbags, but even one death is too many. In addition, there are many other airbag related injuries that [...]
