A new study on truck driver behavior found some concerning results, specifically regarding drug and alcohol use by drivers while they are on the road. The study found that substances like alcohol, amphetamines, marijuana, and cocaine were all used by some truck drivers at varying levels. The study was conducted internationally, so it included data from the United States as well as many other countries to get an idea of the behavior of professional truckers as a whole population. Some of the data came from questionnaires filled out by the drivers and other data came from biological testing to detect recent drug or alcohol use. [...]

Diet pill pulled from shelves after it was linked to liver damage

Sometimes consumers make the mistake of believing that because something does not require a prescription it will not be potent enough to cause serious health issues. However, in the case of diet supplements that tout their ability to help buyers lose weight, the ingredients can be very potent and very harmful even if it is sold on the shelf in the grocery store. This may be the case for a diet supplement know as OxyELITE, which was just pulled from store shelves after being linked to 29 recent cases of liver failure and acute hepatitis. Has the government shutdown impacted vehicle safety?

There has been a lot of discussion in the news the past two weeks about which government agencies and services have and have not been shut down a result of the budget and debt ceiling impasse. And, even as the shutdown may be nearing an end with leaders in the Senate saying that they have reach a compromise, there are many who remain concerned that the consequences of the government shutdown could last beyond the time when all of the offices re-open their doors since it will take time to catch up from missed work. One area where this is particularly concerning is the area of [...]

Studies look for ways to prevent doctor burnout

Burnout is a problem in any demanding job and can cause even the most well-trained professional to make mistakes or overlook an important detail. In the medical profession burnout can mean more medication errors, a possible missed diagnosis, or other mistakes that can lead to serious patient injuries. Unfortunately, burnout is so prevelant in the medical profession that doctors have a higher risk for substance abuse, lying, cheating, and in some cases are at an increased risk for suicide. What Government Statistics Aren’t Telling You About Serious and Fatal Bus Accidents

Jim Vititoe and Vititoe Law Group are passionate about making bus travel safer through common sense safety regulations and laws. This is the first blog in a series of blogs regarding bus accidents and bus safety. People use buses every day for a variety of transportation reasons. The size of the bus (small, medium, or large) or the type of the bus (coach, tour, or school) often depends on the purpose of travel. According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, from 1975-2010, there were 1471 passenger fatalities on buses. That is an average of 42 per year. But further investigation shows that the number is higher. [...]

Fatalities from hospital mistakes may be underestimated: Part One

It may seem like an old trope at this point to say that the most dangerous place for a sick person is a hospital. This has been said many times before when reports show the high rates of contagious illnesses in hospitals as well as the harm patients are exposed to as a result of simple mistakes that can occur in the hectic setting. However, a new study shows that the rate of deaths associated with a medical mistake are double the previous estimates. A study by a government agency conducted in 2010 found that 180,000 patients in the Medicare system died as a result of [...]
