Are More Deaths from Large Truck Crashes Caused by Drivers Racing the Clock?

Does a federal rule requiring truckers to take a rest break after eight hours of driving have them racing to make up time, causing an increase in fatal crashes? Some in the industry claim that it does. According to data provided by the Highway Traffic Safety Administration, deaths from large truck crashes in 2017 reached the highest level in 29 years. While deaths in motor vehicle crashes declined by 2 percent from the prior year, large-truck fatalities rose 9 percent to 4,761, an increase of 392 fatalities above the prior year. Workplace Fatalities Break 5000 for the First Time

According to a Bureau of Labor Statistics news release posted in December 2017, workplace deaths rose by 7% in 2016 to a record 5,190. “This is the third consecutive increase in annual workplace fatalities and the first time more than 5000 fatalities have been recorded by the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries since 2008. Company Settles Construction Death Case for $2.5 Million

Berkeley Redevelopers, a New Jersey construction company, has agreed to pay $2.5 million to the estate of Raymond Crosby, an equipment mechanic, crushed to death during the demolition of a former Woolworth store. The construction company failed to obtain a building evaluation by a demolition engineer to properly tear down the building the suit alleged. The Present Danger of California Street Racing

On August 31, 2018 another tragedy unfolded on a California highway as a result of street racing.  Ariyana Luna 20, who was eight months pregnant with her first child, along with her fiancé Valentino Ramirez, died together in a crash on the 60 Freeway in Moreno Valley. American Academy of Pediatrics Issues New Child Safety Seat Guidelines

In an updated policy statement, scheduled for publication in the November 2018 issue of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Pediatrics establishes new guidelines on car safety seats.
