How long does it take to become distracted while driving?

We frequently write about the hazards associated with distracted driving. We have discussed technology and educational campaigns designed to curb this behavior. We have also noted that numerous kinds of distraction are hazardous. It is understandable that most technology and educational campaigns are currently focused on reducing the prevalence of interacting with electronic communication devices while driving. Your medical records may be surprisingly precious

We have previously discussed how important it is to be an informed patient. Certainly, it is important to seek out qualified medical professionals and, at least to some extent, trust in their expertise. However, medical professionals are human and are ultimately prone to make mistakes and missteps. As a result, it is important to be an informed patient so that you place yourself in the best possible position to advocate on behalf of your own health and wellbeing. One of the tools that you may find invaluable in your quest to remain an informed patient is your own medical records. By understanding your medical history and [...]

Does it matter if your vehicle crash was work related? – Part II

In our last blog post, we began a discussion about vehicle crashes that may or may not be considered “work related” under the law. We noted that if you were recently involved in a vehicle crash that had some link to your employment that you may want to consider speaking with an experienced attorney. A local attorney should be able to analyze the specific circumstances surrounding your case and be able to advise you on whether it can be considered work related. If it can be considered work related, you may then decide whether to file a workers’ compensation claim or a personal injury suit. We [...]

Does it matter if your vehicle crash was work related? – Part I

If you have recently been involved in a motor vehicle accident, it is important to determine whether the accident can be considered to be “work related” under the law. If your accident was work related, you may be able to collect workers’ compensation depending on the circumstances of the accident and the nature of harm that you suffered as a result of the accident. However, it may be more beneficial to pursue a personal injury suit whether or not your accident was work related. Before you consider your options for compensation, you must first determine whether the crash you were involved in can be considered work [...]

What You Should Know About Social Media and Your Personal Injury Case

The internet, or more specifically, the world-wide web and its social properties, are typically not private. Yet, all too many people involved in personal injury cases make the mistake of believing that their user profiles, be it Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, Instagram, or other social platforms, are. After all, they have their privacy settings locked-down tightly and only friends can see what they are posting, keeping away the prying eyes of friends-of-friends, and of course, the public. If it were only that straightforward, many personal injury cases would go more smoothly, but unfortunately, that’s not the way it works when it comes to the law. In [...]

Study: ER MDs are ordering too many advanced diagnostic scans

A recently published study in the medical journal Academic Emergency Medicine made some truly eye-opening findings concerning the practice of defensive medicine, meaning when physicians order an excess of diagnostic exams out of concerns over a possible misdiagnosis or failure to diagnose. The study, performed by researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles, found that 97 percent of the 435 emergency room physicians who took part in a survey indicated that they had ordered advanced diagnostic scans — CT scans, MRIs, etc. — that were medically unnecessary, and that over 85 percent believed this practice was widespread. […]

FAA releases cockpit safety information in wake of fatal crash

According to French prosecutors, an investigation into the recent Germanwings crash has determined that the co-pilot of the plane locked the pilot out of the cockpit and then deliberately slammed the plane into the French Alps. Cockpit voice recordings have been recovered and were used in the analysis of this determination. Understandably, air travelers worldwide are asking how this co-pilot could have possibly been deemed fit to fly. In the wake of the fatal crash, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has released information about how it seeks to ensure cockpit safety on domestic airlines. Obviously, airlines based in countries outside the U.S. have their own rules [...]
