Cause of fatal California bus crash still unknown

Investigators are still reviewing evidence from a California bus crash that caused ten fatalities last week. The crash occurred when a package delivery truck cross the median and collided with a car and then a bus carrying high school students. At least one person who witnessed the accident said that when the delivery truck crossed the median it was on fire. However, investigators say that their preliminary findings indicate that the truck was not on fire at the time it first came in contact with the sedan on the road. There is still a lot of missing information about this multi-vehicle accident, so it is too [...]

Regulators tackle issue of bus safety

In a recent post we discussed the issue of unsafe coach bus companies operating in California. A recent crash that injured many passengers injured involved a bus company that had been previously cited for safety violations but that was still operating in the state of California. The facts surrounding this crash echoed those in another California bus crash when 11 passengers were injured and eight people were killed by a bus with faulty breaks that had possibly been overlooked by state safety inspectors. Unfortunately, these stories have repeated themselves nationwide, with innocent customers being injured by negligent bus companies skirting safety laws and inaction by regulators [...]

Tour bus crash sends 15 people to the hospital

A Southern California tour bus crash sent 15 people to the hospital this week. The crash occurred when the bus driver rear-ended a big rig truck. A total of 36 people were on board the bus at the time. There were no fatalities. The bus company that owns the vehicle that was involved in this bus crash has been the subject of scrutiny in the past, both from the press and regulators. In fact, reports had recently surfaced that the company was still operating despite a terrible safety record. Investigative journalists found that drivers from the company were routinely distracted and often use their cellphones on [...]

California tour bus crash injures 13

More than a dozen people were injured earlier this week when a tour bus driving through Southern California crashed into a drainage ditch, fence, and light pole. The bus remained upright which may have limited the injuries to the passengers who were trapped briefly before rescue workers were able to unblock the door of the bus. There were about 40 passengers on board the bus at the time of the accident, most of the injuries were reported to be minor, although it is not clear if any of the passengers experienced whiplash or other head or neck injuries. Sometimes these types of injuries are not immediately [...]

Safety Board says lack of oversight led to bus crashes

The National Transportation Safety Board has issued a statement saying that the federal Transportation Department has not done enough to protect consumers from fatal bus accidents. The statements came after a review of the Transportation Department stemming from four fatal bus accidents within the last year which killed a total of 25 people and injured 83. While overall traffic accidents have decreased and the number of heavy truck crashes have decreased, safety regulators remain concerned that the number of bus fatalities is stagnant. This indicates that there is something more dangerous about the way the bus industry operates. […]

What Government Statistics Aren’t Telling You About Serious and Fatal Bus Accidents

Jim Vititoe and Vititoe Law Group are passionate about making bus travel safer through common sense safety regulations and laws. This is the first blog in a series of blogs regarding bus accidents and bus safety. People use buses every day for a variety of transportation reasons. The size of the bus (small, medium, or large) or the type of the bus (coach, tour, or school) often depends on the purpose of travel. According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, from 1975-2010, there were 1471 passenger fatalities on buses. That is an average of 42 per year. But further investigation shows that the number is higher. [...]
