Doctors’ skills, knowledge can erode after long hiatus

People in Southern California step away from their jobs all the time. They may become a stay-at-home parent or caregiver to an ill loved one, or they may have to deal with a serious illness of their own. After several years, the person may decide that it is time to return to work. But in many specialized fields, things change quickly. Practices and techniques that were the norm five or 10 years ago may now be totally out of date. If the field we are talking about is medicine, a patient’s health and safety could be in the hands of a rusty and behind-the-times physician. [...]

California may soon explicitly embrace lane splitting

California motorists are not strangers to the practice of lane splitting. Think back to the last few times you were navigating a significant flow of traffic on one of the Golden State’s many crowded freeways. At any point, did you encounter a motorcycle? Did that motorcycle happen to travel between you and the vehicle next to you, even though the vehicle next to you was already traveling in the next lane over? This practice is referred to as lane splitting. For decades, the California Highway Patrol and other law enforcement officers have implicitly allowed motorcyclists to lane split, especially under certain conditions. In fact, a great [...]

Helmet camera shows scary motorcycle incident

Just north of Los Angeles, a motorcyclist nearly got into an accident with another motorcyclist. Now, we know that’s not exactly the most thrilling bit of a news. In fact, you may not even consider it news at all. However, there is one element involved in this near-head-on crash that caught our eye — and it will certainly catch the eye of the motorcycle community. Here’s what happened: one of the motorcyclists was riding properly in his lane as he drove through the mountains on a seemingly open road. But another motorcyclist coming from the other direction swerved into the lane of the first motorcyclist, causing [...]

What can you do to observe Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month?

There is an inherent danger to many of the activities we participate in every day. Most of us acknowledge but refuse to worry about most of these dangers, such as the risk of getting into a car accident. If we constantly worried about such risks, we would be largely unable to live productive lives outside our homes. But for motorcyclists, the calculation of risk is different. Those who primarily ride motorcycles understand that the risks of death or significant injury are much higher than they are for individuals who drive in cars or trucks. Motorcycles offer less protection in the event of an accident, which means [...]

Your medical records may be surprisingly precious

We have previously discussed how important it is to be an informed patient. Certainly, it is important to seek out qualified medical professionals and, at least to some extent, trust in their expertise. However, medical professionals are human and are ultimately prone to make mistakes and missteps. As a result, it is important to be an informed patient so that you place yourself in the best possible position to advocate on behalf of your own health and wellbeing. One of the tools that you may find invaluable in your quest to remain an informed patient is your own medical records. By understanding your medical history and [...]

Study: ER MDs are ordering too many advanced diagnostic scans

A recently published study in the medical journal Academic Emergency Medicine made some truly eye-opening findings concerning the practice of defensive medicine, meaning when physicians order an excess of diagnostic exams out of concerns over a possible misdiagnosis or failure to diagnose. The study, performed by researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles, found that 97 percent of the 435 emergency room physicians who took part in a survey indicated that they had ordered advanced diagnostic scans — CT scans, MRIs, etc. — that were medically unnecessary, and that over 85 percent believed this practice was widespread. […]

Will CA’s position on lane-splitting be adopted by other states?

Chances are very good that as you’ve sat in one of the innumerable traffic jams here in Southern California that you’ve seen motorcycles navigating their way between the rows of stopped vehicles, a practice known as lane-splitting. While your automatic reaction might be to think the practice is unsafe and even illegal, this is not necessarily the case. Indeed, public safety officials have gone out of their way to raise public awareness about the legality of lane-splitting, which statistics show currently sits at only about 61 percent. […]

FAA releases cockpit safety information in wake of fatal crash

According to French prosecutors, an investigation into the recent Germanwings crash has determined that the co-pilot of the plane locked the pilot out of the cockpit and then deliberately slammed the plane into the French Alps. Cockpit voice recordings have been recovered and were used in the analysis of this determination. Understandably, air travelers worldwide are asking how this co-pilot could have possibly been deemed fit to fly. In the wake of the fatal crash, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has released information about how it seeks to ensure cockpit safety on domestic airlines. Obviously, airlines based in countries outside the U.S. have their own rules [...]

Dangerous runways threaten the safety of airline passengers

Much of the world was shocked when news broke of an accident that caused a Delta Air Lines passenger plane to skid off a runway at LaGuardia Airport yesterday. According to numerous media outlets, the plane slid after landing and was only halted a few feet from the bank of the frigid East River. As of yesterday, it seems that nothing was mechanically wrong with the plane and no reports of pilot error surfaced in the hours immediately following the accident. Should the world have been shocked that a LaGuardia runway was essentially transformed into a slip-and-slide of ice and snow that imperiled the lives of [...]

Do you fear being injured or killed in a plane crash? – Part II

Last week, we began a discussion aimed at helping to ease the fears of individuals who fear being injured or killed in airplane crashes. Although aviation accidents are relatively uncommon and air travel is far safer than travel by motor vehicle, many Americans suffer significantly because they are afraid of flying. Understandably, these individuals either avoid flying or attempt to limit their air travel. However, air travel cannot be avoided by all people who possess these fears. As a result, it is important that they find ways to make flying more manageable. We noted that there are several preparations that people can engage in when preparing [...]
