CDC report sheds light on the cost of crash injuries

It is not news that car accidents can cause lifelong, debilitating injuries. These injuries can lead to people having to find new careers, or even stop working all together. Others will find themselves being billed for tens of thousands of dollars worth of medical services. These are services and treatments that, in many cases, were needed to save their lives — and are continuously needed try and improve or maintain their quality of life.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently published a report highlighting the financial damage caused by motor vehicle accidents. The results may be shocking to some of our California readers.  [...]

Could the ‘drive a dirty car campaign’ go too far?

In January, Gov. Jerry Brown declared that California was in an emergency drought situation. The need to conserve precious and dwindling water resources in the state prompted the “drive a dirty car” campaign. The public awareness push challenges residents to go an entire month without washing their car.  The campaign has received more of a favorable response than some supporters originally may have expected. In fact, since January, water usage has dropped by 5 percent — although the statistic doesn’t specifically factor in the no-wash movement. “We had no idea how this would go down,” said Nancy Broschart, management analyst at Ventura Water.  The campaign is [...]

How should I respond to a fender-bender?

Auto accidents can be devastating. They can be destructive, injurious and even fatal. Severe accidents may make headlines, but even seemingly minor accidents can result in enough property and bodily damage to be noteworthy. If you have recently been involved in a fender-bender, you may feel disoriented. You may have questions about whether or not your accident is “significant” enough to contact an attorney about. In general, it is better to be safe than sorry. What does this guidance mean practically? It means that in the wake of all kinds of auto accidents, individuals find themselves in need of an attorney’s expertise. Whether it is to [...]

To keep elderly drivers safe, seek regular checkups

Every individual ages in different ways. For example, some individuals start to need glasses once they reach the age of retirement, even though their vision has been perfect for their entire lives before this point. Other individuals maintain perfect eyesight well into their 90s. Because there is no master formula for aging, it is inappropriate to treat all elderly drivers as either capable or disadvantaged in the same ways. Instead, it is important for all elderly drivers to seek regular medical checkups in which their capacities for safe driving are assessed. Some individuals will pass these checkups with flying colors for the remainder of their lives. [...]

Head Traumas in Car Accidents Can Have Lasting Effects

By Larry Bodine, Publisher of The National Trial Lawyers Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major cause of death and disability in California, contributing to about 30% of all injury deaths. Every day, 138 people in the United States die from injuries that include TBI, and those who survive a TBI can face effects that may last the rest of their lives. Motor vehicle crashes were the third overall leading cause of TBI Among all age groups, according to the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention. When looking at just TBI-related deaths, motor vehicle crashes were the second leading cause of TBI-related deaths for 2006-2010. Effects [...]

Safety challenges for cyclists in Oxnard and Los Angeles

We frequently write about the hazards of distracted driving. One population in particular seems to be suffering as a result of widespread distraction among motorists in Oxnard and Los Angeles. Unlike motorists, truck drivers and even motorcyclists, bicyclists are compelled to ride the same roads and navigate the same hazards without a heavy-duty motorized vehicle to absorb the brunt of an impact. When bicycle accidents occur as a result of distracted driving, the consequences can be catastrophic. Unfortunately, the executive director of the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition recently told Los Angeles Magazine that, “To everyone’s peril, it seems that drivers are more distracted now than [...]

Google fleet operates without brake pedals and steering wheels

Current models of self-driving cars may currently be the best glimpse Americans can have into the future of transportation. But what exactly does it mean to be a self-driving vehicle? Many auto manufacturers are exploring the potential of self-driving cars. However, explaining this phenomenon is perhaps best illustrated by the fleet of self-driving vehicles being built by Google. Because self-driving cars are meant to reduce the risk any motorist has of being involved in car accidents caused by driver error, self-driving vehicles practically rid motorists’ need to actively drive. Save for emergency situations, self-driving vehicles do not require motorists to operate these machines while they are [...]

IIHS data indicates automakers are improving crash avoidance

Earlier this spring, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety released the results of safety tests on 24 newer vehicle models. This release hardly seems newsworthy at first glance. After all, the IIHS, federal regulators, auto manufacturers and other interested organizations release a seemingly endless stream of safety ratings every year. However, this release is decidedly unique for one reason. In its latest round of crash avoidance tests, the IIHS specifically concerned itself with vehicle performance in relation to distracted drivers. Specifically, the organization focused on safety performance during rear-end car accidents caused by distracted drivers. Given that distracted driving behaviors now contribute to more accidents than [...]

Government seeks to regulate GPS devices and navigational apps

California’s laws against distracted driving are among the toughest in the nation. Most states have banned texting while driving, but only about a dozen have also banned the use of handheld cellphones behind the wheel. It is important to note, however, that texting and talking are not the only two distractions caused by these small electronic devices. Many drivers use the GPS navigational aids on their cellphones while the car is in motion. This could just as easily cause a car accident and it certainly looks like distracted driving, but it is not explicitly banned under California law. […]

Student-led campaign promotes distraction-free summer driving

What can happen in four seconds? Most of us would answer: not much. But four seconds is approximately the minimum amount of time the average distracted driver looks away from the road when reading or composing a text message. Four seconds isn’t enough time to do much generally, but it is enough time to kill yourself or someone if you drive while distracted. This is one of the messages a group of students is trying to spread around the country in the “TextLess Live More” campaign. The initiative is inspired by the memory of a young woman who was killed by a distracted driver who looked [...]
