How Safe are Amusement Park and Carnival Rides?

The frequency of amusement park and carnival ride accidents reported on the news is alarming. The most recent was the tragic death of a young man on the Fireball ride in Ohio who was thrown into the air and landing on the pavement fifty feet away. Seven others were injured in that accident. In June of this year, a girl fell 25 feet from a gondola ride in New York’s Great Adventure. In May, a 10 year old was tossed of a giant waterslide in a brand new California water park. Fortunately neither of them was seriously injured. Sadly, others have not been so lucky. Caleb [...]

Why Should I Wear My Seatbelt in an Uber or Lyft?

Ride share companies utilize smartphone technology to provide an alternative to taxi cabs and other forms of public transportation. The ride share company can keep its operating costs low because they are not regulated by states and cities and are not required to carry the same type of insurance as cabs or to purchase expensive medallions. Statistics from the National Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA) show that only 65% of passengers buckle up in taxis compared to 87% in private vehicles. The apparent reason for failure to buckle up is the fact that most pubic transit lacks seatbelts and riders are not accustomed to doing it. California [...]

Study Reveals Dementia in Working Age Adults Connected to Traumatic Brain Injury

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) has been associated with an increased risk of dementia in working-age adults, according to a recent study. The same study, which embodied the entire Finnish population, showed no relationship between TBI and later onset of Parkinson’s disease or ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease). Researchers from the University of Helsinki and the Helsinki University Hospital, who conducted the study, believe that these results may be of great benefit in the rehabilitation and long-term monitoring of TBI victims. Approximately one in three that receive a moderate to severe traumatic brain injury die and half of those that survive suffer a life-long disability. These grim statistics [...]

San Diego Police use the Drager Drug Test 5000 to Assist in Making DUI Marijuana Arrests

Last month the first arrests were reported in San Diego for driving under the influence of marijuana using the new Drager Drug Test 5000. The device acts much like a Breathalyzer except it requires police to swab the inside of a driver’s mouth and test the results onsite for active THC. Once a positive result is returned, the police can obtain a warrant for a blood drawing to determine the actual blood level of THC. While a blood alcohol test is generally accurate, a screening for THC may be inconclusive. There is no level of THC that is a current standard for a DUI marijuana charge [...]

Missouri Hospitals to Pay $34 Million in Whistleblower Suit

Two southwest Missouri hospitals have agreed to pay $34 million to the Medicare program for alleged violations of the False Claims Act. The hospitals, formerly known as St. John’s Regional Health Center and St. John’s Clinic, once employed Dr. Holden, who accused them of billing Medicare for chemotherapy services provided to patients who were referred to them by oncologists. These [...]

Who is Responsible for a Firearm Accident Injury?

Firearm related accidental deaths and injuries have steadily declined nationwide over the past 25 years. Despite having the 8th lowest number of per capita gun deaths in the U.S. in 2014, California still suffered 2,935 deaths from firearms. In addition, 5,724 persons were hospitalized with non-fatal gunshot wounds that same year. Although accidental firearm deaths and injuries are uncommon compared to motor vehicle or workplace accidents, their occurrence is often sudden and traumatic. When it happens to a loved one, especially a child, it is heart wrenching. If you or someone you care about was injured or you lost a loved one due to a gun [...]

What Caused My Mesothelioma and Who is to Blame

Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that attacks the tissue surrounding the body’s internal organs known as the mesothelium. The function of this tissue is to provide the fluid that acts as a lubricant to aid the movement of the organs. Although there are three different forms of mesothelioma, 75 percent of all cases are pleural, originating in the chest cavity. The exposure to asbestos in large amounts, or over an extended period of time, is the sole recognized cause of pleural mesothelioma. The tissue cells become damaged and scarred by the fibers of asbestos leading to the production of cancerous cells. These cells divide rapidly, [...]

Cohen Veterans Bioscience and the American College of Radiology (ACR) is launching the first imaging library for traumatic brain injury (TBI).
